1. In order, with 1 being the lowest and 5 the highest, who are the five most powerful sports personalities in Louisville?
Gary Ulmer, Jerry Abramsom, Jim Host (ugh), Rick Pitino, Tom Jurich
2. Do you think Louisville’s sports media corps tells you the truth most of the time or are they essentially homers?
Truth. Alan Cutler was a homer. No Cutler types here since Domine semi-retired.
3. Taking into consideration the total cost, traffic, parking, and connectivity to other downtown venues, did the Louisville Arena Authority pick the best site for the 21,000-seat downtown arena?
No. LWC property obvious best choice. Most east end fans ($$$) will drive right out of town after games on River Road and eastbound interstates.
4. What is your opinion about the idea to renovate Freedom Hall and lure an NBA team to play there?
I am for it but I think that ship has sailed.
5. Should the University of Louisville move ahead with plans to expand Papa John’s Cardinal Stadium from 42,000 seats to 63,000?
No. Demand is not there
6. When you heard that the rumor about Steve Kragthorpe going to SMU was false, what was your gut reaction?
Not surprised given environment in college these days.
7. What do you like or dislike the most about The
Courier-Journal’s sports coverage ?
Good high school cover, good racing coverage. I wish they would publish a national columnist more often, like Lopresti or Plaschke
8. On a scale of 1 to 10, with 1 being the lowest, how would you grade Churchill Downs on customer service?
8
9. Should the Louisville Bats stick to the purple-and-gold color scheme of their former parent club, the Milwaukee Brewers, or switch to the red-and-black scheme of their current parent, the Cincinnati Reds?
Keep it. No guarantee the Reds will stay.
10. Which local sportscaster do you like the most and which do you hate the most?
Cowgill is best. McClane on WHAS SportsTalk is incredibly annoying. Unlistenable.
11. From 1 to 5, with 1 being the lowest and 5 the highest, who are the five most over-rated sports figures in Louisville?
Sorry Billy…Paul Hornung, Mike Glaser, Greg Page drawing a blank on 2 more
12. Are the Louisville Bats the best sports bargain in town?
Yes but every seat available on game day (past the bullpens) faces centerfield. An incredible design flaw that nobody talks about. I say tear out all the concrete and seats and face the seats to 2nd base.
13. Other than the home games of the U of L mens basketball team, what events do you see coming to Louisville on an annual basis that will fill the new arena to near its 21,000-seat capacity?
That’s the $$500 million dollar question! I can think of none other than Southeast Christian Easter Sunday Service
14. Do women’s sports get more or less newspaper space than fan interest indicates they deserve?
Sorry ladies but too much. And I say that not even living in a WNBA city.
15. When the renovation to the Louisville Gardens is complete, and if Freedom Hall were to be renovated, does Louisville really need a 21,000-seat downtown arena?
No. But I also agreed with Mike Barry that the turf course at Churchill Downs was a bad idea.
16. On a scale of 1 to 10, with 1 being the lowest, how do you rate Jerry Abramson as a sports mayor?
10 – Look What We Can Do!
17. Should the site of the old River Road Country Club be restored as a public golf course or turned into fields for soccer and field hockey?
I like the idea someone floated to make it a public course and then sell off Crescent Hill GC for millions so Pitino can have some more rich neighbors. Either way, keep it a golf course.
18. When it comes to concessions, where do you feel most gouged and where do you feel the prices are fair?
Gouged = Churchill Downs - any day and especially Derby/Oaks
Fair = Slugger Field
19. When it comes to sports issues, do you feel that civic and government leaders listen to the average fan or do they just do what they want?
If it’s a small sport thing (biking, parks, soccer fields etc) pretty receptive. The big $$$ things are a different story as you well know (Fair Board, Arena Authority).
20. Is Billy Clyde Gillispie the answer to UK’s basketball future?
If you’re a Louisville fan - yes

1.Wolford, Bridgeman,Pitino, Jurich, Ali
2 They tell the truth as they see it. It’s just that some are not really all that bright. So what they see as truth can tend to be a fairly common misconception.
3 Yes, the perfect location for all involved.
4 Go for it. Just don’t put Bruce Miller in charge. For whatever reasons, it hasn’t happened with his efforts so far. But, I thank him for trying. The only guy who could really make this happen is no longer with us, Wendell Cherry.
5 No. Not with Steve Kragthorpe as the face of the program. When Jeff Brohm replaces Kragthorpe as Head Coach, then they should move forward.
6 It was obviously a phony set up configured by the UL sports marketing department to make a weakened Coach look strong. Smelled like total BS. Just like this last garbage rumor about UCLA wanting to speak with Kragthorpe. Please! I guess they were really impressed when he got his butt kicked by a 35 pt underdog at home on national TV. And taking a very talented team and going 6-6 is really impressive!! Oh yea!! All the other schools are falling over themselves to hire this guy. What a joke. It’s an insult to the fans who pay these peoples salaries.
7 Since we lost Reed, Fenlon and Kindred, it’s never been the same. But at least Crawford has an intellect that is functional. Current goner Pat Forde and Bozich put together couldn’t carry Billy Reed’s jockstrap.
8. Eight
9 Combine the two
10. The Afternoon Underdogs are so shallow, repetitious and inane that they are virtually unlistenable. And when they bring Bob Domine on it’s like someone opened a stinking jar of baby food and then the baby passed gas. If that’s all it takes to get on the radio, clearly the bar is set too low. Volvano is excellent as is Rogers. Wolford grows on you.
11.Overrated from least to most: Afternoon Underdogs, Bob Domine, Charlie Stubbs, Mitch Barnhart and Steve Kragthorpe.
I only have time for the next two:
16. Tom Jurich is the Mayor of Sports in this town.
20. Gillipsie may yet turn out to be an outstanding fit for UK. I don’t know the rumors, and most others who talk or write about them don’t either. You’ve got to give a basketball coach a chance to recruit. Getting Patterson this year earned BCG another years recruiting class. Next year will be the year to start judging BCG by wins and losses. He has an eye for outstanding talent and the ability to sign them. Whether he can survive the politics and scrutiny of Big Blue Nation is another story.

1. Abramson, Ali, Host, Pitino, Jurich
2. Most are homers. The larger question though is the reluctance to criticize U of L and/or Jurich. Is it job security or a means to preserve access?
3. No. Water Company site was best.
4. NBA and Freedom Hall do not work. Downtown arena? Maybe. I would be in favor of exploring it.
5. Not after this season.
6. It was too good to be true.
7. I like horse racing, high school and college sports coverage. Daily coverage of professional sports games is okay but would like to see more weekly columns about the leagues. I don’t like the coziness between UL and CJ, and would like to see more diversity in the columnists. Nothing against any one of them personally, but its too much like a good old boy club.
8. eight is good.
9. I would identify with the Reds.
10. Best: TV - Cowgill, radio - The Freak, John Renshaw, print - Billy Reed. Worst - Bob Domine and the Afternoon Underdogs.
11. I’ll skip this one. Maybe 1-2 are Pitino & Jurich. I like and respect both but they are not perfect, beyond reproach.
12. High school sports are the best bargain in town.
13. I think we will do better with major concerts, and secondary NCAA sports, anything except obviously Final Fours and Men’s regionals.
14. its about right.
15. Need it? no. Is it a good idea? Maybe still yes. I don’t know enough about the Gardens rehab but I don’t think it will include 12,000 seats.
16. 7
17. I’m in favor of other use if it can be turned into a complex that will draw visitors, tournaments, etc. — otherwise golf is ok.
18. Slugger Field is pretty fair, others are gouging.
19. They do what they want, or what the movers tell them.
20. My guess is no, but then again IMO only a ghost will do for the UK faithful.
This was fun but relocate the poll so more people can participate. I had seen it when it was first posted, so I made it a point to find it when I had some time. It wasn’t easy to find today.
